钛镍黄的晶型和金红石型TiO2相同，其颜色的产生是由于在金红石型TiO2的晶体结构中，位于配位中心的钛部分地被发色元素镍取代（和钛一样，镍的配位数也是6），从而产生了鲜明的黄色。5价锑起稳定作用，在2价镍取代4价钛时，使晶体结构在电荷上得到补偿。在杂质晶格中，要使阴离子对阳离子的比维持在2：1，比值低于2时，产生氧空位（肖特基缺陷，Schottky Defect),导致钛镍黄的颜色发暗。钛镍黄是一种固熔体，镍和锑是在1000℃左右的高温下，通过热扩散的方式进入TiO2的晶格中的，在化学上十分稳定。把钛镍黄在盐酸和硫酸中煮沸，它既不分解出镍成分，也不分解出锑成分，颜色也不发生任何变化。钛镍黄在水中煮沸时，镍和锑的萃取量极微，通常在2×10-6以下。钛镍黄颜料在化学上是相当稳定的，它不仅对酸或碱有良好的稳定性，而且对氧化剂和还原剂以及硫化物都有优异的稳定性。一般来说，铅、铬、砷、锑和镉等重金属都是有毒的，但在钛镍黄颜料中，含有相当大量的氧化锑，但因为它已经和氧化钛和氧化镍形成共晶的固熔体，所以在化学上十分稳定。它在各种使用条件下都不会分解出锑、镍成分，所以钛镍黄颜料是无毒的。钛镍黄对各种动物进行的药物试验也证明它是无毒的。各种天然曝晒和人工加速耐候试验证明，钛镍黄的耐久性和耐候性都胜过金红石型钛白。钛镍黄是在1000℃以上的高温下生产出来的，其耐热性能极好。在通常情况下，不仅钛镍黄本身不发生变化，也不会引起与它一起使用的其它颜料或介质发生变化。
