白色粉末。纯品虽然也可以作为防锈颜料使用，但价格太高，难以推广使用。市场上商品颜料中以钼酸锌或碱式钼酸锌（ZnO・ZnMoO4）为主，加入一些碳酸钙或沉淀硫酸钡、滑石粉、二氧化硅，制成复合型防锈颜料，称为白色钼酸盐颜料，其中主要成分除钼酸锌以外，也有可能含有钼酸钙或钼酸锶，一般均含有75%的填料。毒性小，使用安全，所制成的底漆可以呈白色，使白色面漆的遮盖力可以降低，从而节约制造白漆所用钛白粉的用量。此外，它本身也有一些遮盖力，可以替代部分遮盖力强的颜料。价格适中，可以替代含铅、含铬的有毒防锈颜料，而不大影响制漆成本。有时，还同磷酸盐防锈颜料配合作用，如钼酸离子同磷酸离子的比例以7:3配合，可得到较好防锈效果。
